No other test drivers I spoke with experienced this feeling, but I have to recommend that anyone interested in buying a Santa Cruz test the seat out for themselves, because it is a complete deal breaker for me if every example is like this.Currently the most affordable pickup offered by Chevrolet do Brasil, the redesigned Montana is available in two well-equipped trim levels. Despite the truck's many positive aspects, the seat annoyance was bad enough that I rushed my test drive just so I could give the keys back to Hyundai before I developed a permanent kink (my test of the Kona N, just an hour before, did not have this problem, so I don't think it was a quirk of my spine that day). The head rest was pushed too far forward (it can't be moved forward or backward) and no matter what positions I adjusted the moveable parts to, the seat was a punisher, twisting my head so I was forced to look downward in an awkward shape the entire drive. It made me long for the luxurious comfort of the last row of a crowded commercial airliner. ![]() Lastly, and I'm not sure what the issue was, exactly, but I can't end this review without noting that the Santa Cruz had the most uncomfortable driver's seat I've ever sat in. If you squint, it looks like a cute rubber ducky. One thing you won't find in the Tucson, though, is the little Santa Cruz icon on the hill descent control button. Optional features on higher trim levels include blind view monitor, highway driving assist and navigation based smart cruise control with curve control. Infotainment and safety options mirror those in other new Hyundai vehicles, including Apple AAPL CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and standard features like forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, leading vehicle departure alert, driver attention warning and lane keep assist. The interior is a bit of a compromise, with no manual knobs for things like volume or HVAC controls, that is similar, again, to the Tuscon. Without those trailer brakes, each version can tow 1,650 pounds. The FWD model is limited to 3,500 pounds, with trailer brakes. In that case, with trailer brakes, the maximum trailer weight is 5,000 pounds. ![]() If - I suspect when - Hyundai decides to offer a hybrid Santa Cruz, the extra effort of the electric motor will be even more fun.īoth front-wheel and all-wheel drive powertrains are available, and the AWD is the one you'll want for heavier towing. The 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, which produces 281 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and eight-speed automatic transmission are a great fit for an SAV of this size, able to punch the little truck around twisty roads or just to accelerate to pass on the highway. It's unlike a large truck (duh!) and felt stiffer than a Hyundai Tucson, upon which it is based. ![]() The Santa Cruz is an enjoyable vehicle to drive, snappy and relatively light. ![]()
